2nd International EAU-eULIS Comprehensive Urolithiasis Workshop 28-29 April 2011, Sofia

The 2nd International EAU-eULIS Comprehensive Urolithiasis Workshop was held on April 28th-29th 2011 at the brand new operating theatre and lithotripsy suite of the Department of Urology and Nephrology, Military Medical Academy, Sofia, Bulgaria and organized with the support of the EAU Section of Urolithiasis (eULIS) and the EAU Section of Urological Technology (ESUT).

The workshop was conducted by an international reputed faculty, including Prof. T. Knoll (Sindelfingen, Germany), Prof. K. Sarica (Istanbul, Turkey), Dr. N. Buchholz (London, UK), Prof. B. Hess (Zurich, Switzerland) and Prof. I. Saltirov (Sofia, Bulgaria), who presented live-surgery demonstrations and state-of-the-art lectures on pathophysiology, metaphylaxis, endoscopic and medical treatment of stone disease in adults and children.

Thirteen participants from different European countries (Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Hungary, Austria) attended the course. The participants had the chance to experience live-surgery demonstrations, “state-of-the-art” and “how-I-do-it” lectures and to update their knowledge on the surgical and medical treatment of stone disease. The endoscopic and X-ray images, video and audio rooting from the operating theatre were simultaneously transmitted in the conference room in real time, thus making the live-surgery sessions more interactive and giving the chance to the trainees to actively participate with questions and comments.

On the first day, the workshop started with live-surgery demonstrations. Each clinical case was presented prior to surgery and the treatment approach discussed with the participants. The live-surgery demonstration included rigid ureteroscopy with Holmium laser lithotripsy of proximal ureteral stone and Mini-PCNL. The live-surgery session was followed by state-of-the-art and tips-and-tricks lectures on flexible ureteroscopy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) presented by renowned experts.

On the second day, the workshop continued with another live-surgery session on endoscopic combined intrarenal surgery and rigid ureteroscopy with Holmium laser lithotripsy of distal ureteral stone, followed by lectures on recent advances in the endoscopic and SWL management of pediatric stone disease and on pathophysiology, metabolic evaluation and medical management of stone disease.
